You look straight back at Claire and swallow down, what may very likely be, your last moment on Earth. Again, she doesn’t flinch and even loosens her grip on your hand as if she already knows what is about to happen next. You look at her whole face and swear that the start of a tiny smile has begun to form in the very corner of her mouth.
“Get back!” you shout, stepping forward and pulling Claire’s body next to yours. “Everyone stay where you are!”
You wrap your wounded right forearm across Claire’s shoulders while your left hand quickly recovers the Peacemaker from your waistband. As it appears beside Claire’s head, a resounding, collective gasp passes through the entire crowd. Some of the women begin to scream and cry and obey but most everyone else is shuffling about, tripping over one another to escape.
“Stop!” you shout at them. “Everyone stay still or I’ll blow her goddamn head off!”
“No you won’t.”
As the crowd continues to scramble, you hear Gail’s arrogance rise above everyone else. You can feel your body shaking with nervous energy as you rotate Claire in her direction. Your spit bubbles behind your teeth as a flare of intense pain rushes up your arm, originating from the hole the Reverend left in your forearm.
But you hang on.
“You don’t have the balls to do this,” Gail continues.
She stands alone beside the Reverend. All of the Bridesmaids have moved away and are huddled together and crying against the far wall of the church.
“Just let me go,” you say.
“Go where, my son?” the Reverend begins. His voice is as gentle as you have ever heard it. “Where will you go? We are here to help you. We are not here to harm you in any way.”
Your eyes bounce back and forth between the Reverend and Gail. While he appears understanding, Gail’s face seethes with animosity for both you and, surprisingly, her little sister.
“That selfish bitch,” you think.
“She's actually angry because she’s lost the spotlight!”
“Please,” you begin. “I just want my life back. Just let me go and you’ll never—”
Suddenly, Claire’s elbow slams back against your stomach and knocks you away. Your feet stumble back and find the edge of the steps behind you. Instinctively, you reach out to grab something and maintain your balance, but instead somebody grabs you.
“Argggh!” you scream as an intense pain fills your body. You look up and see Claire squeezing your injured arm and staring back at you. However, before you can say anything, you watch her lips.
“Just go!” she says. Her words are silent and secret. She then releases your arm and you shuffle backward away from her as you clutch your arm.
BOOM!
