A concussive blast echoes throughout the church. Instinctively, everyone freezes where they are and ducks for cover, including yourself. Your heart races and your eyes search frantically in every direction you can see. The front of the pews block most everything from your view but you can hear most everyone crying and screaming, including one voice that, as it begins sobbing uncontrollably, you can hardly believe it.
You lift your head just far enough to follow the sound. It’s the Reverend. He’s fallen to his knees at the front of the altar. Tears drip from his eyes and in his hands he holds Claire against his chest.
You shudder. “Oh God, no...”
Claire’s body hangs lifeless and covered in blood from the waist down. There’s a massive wound in her side, that, as you stare at it, has nearly cut her in half! She’s not breathing and all the color has flushed from her body, leaving her skin a pale bluish-white.
She died instantly.
You tremble and find the Peacemaker in your hand. The barrel is still cold. It hasn’t been fired. You feel your pulse spike and your eyes go wide.
“Gail?” you say her name and begin standing up.
“Gail, what the fuck have you—”
You rise all the way to your feet, holding the revolver out in front of you and pointing it in the direction of the Reverend and Claire. Behind them, Gail cowers away from you but doesn’t look up from her sister. The anger in her face is gone and she sobs just like her father. You take a step toward them and search her hands and the floor around her.
“What the hell just happened?” you ask yourself.
You turn your focus toward the crowd, keeping your revolver out in front of you as you pass over the crowd. People continue to scream and cry as your barrel passes them by. Some of them stare back at you with anger, but there’s no sign of another gun. Nobody is threatening to shoot back. You look back and forth faster, becoming frantic as you search everyone’s face again and again.
“Who did that?” you yell out. “Who shot her?”
You stand your ground and wait but nobody answers. Finally, a few fingers appear and point toward the back of the church. You follow them and notice that doors leading back into the parking lot hang open just a crack.
“Why aren’t you running?” the Reverend asks. His voice is weak but filling with anger.
“Because he’s a fuckin’ pussy!”
You turn around just Gail launches from her feet and takes a swing at you. Her fist slams against your chest and the weight of her body knocks you off your feet. Together you fall down the stairs. Your wounded arm twists and spasms. The pain jerks your body to bend uncontrollably, forcing you to release the Peacemaker as you brace your injured arm. It bounces off the floor and slides away down the aisle as Gail climbs on top of you and delivers her next blow directly into your face.
“I didn’t,” you stutter before Gail hits you again. “I didn’t kill her!”
WHAP!
Her fist comes down again, this time hitting you just below the left eye.
“I know that!” Gail seeths.
WHAP!
“Your fuckin’ bitch did!”
