THE ESCAPE

1-35

You wait in the bathroom and watch Claire leave. She paces at the table stacked with boxes for a moment and then exits the room. Just before she does however, you notice her fingers pass over the lock on the doorknob and set the lock to remain shut. It’s a curious move, as the Reverend has strictly prohibited you from ever being locked inside a room by yourself.

Regardless, you’re all alone now.

You turn around and look into the mirror. The last thirty minutes have revealed more about the Coates family than in all of the previous years you have known them. You rub your face and look down at the crack behind the sink.

“Is it possible,” you think to yourself, “that she really wants you to go through with it?”

You can still smell her presence when you leave the bathroom and walk over to the table beyond the foot of the bed. Immediately, you find the boxers and shorts that you slept in the night before. A ball of mixed emotions rolls through your head as you reach out and grab them. The thought of Gail removing them from your body while you slept still doesn’t seem possible.

“Don’t be stupid.”

You shake the thought from your mind as you quickly pull your boxers back on and begin sorting through the pile of boxes. You must focus on the wedding. Just as Gail had already pointed out, each one contains another piece of your wardrobe for the wedding. Everything is dark gray and finely tailored to your exact size. Gathering the slacks and the pair of black socks first, you are just beginning to walk toward the bed when something catches your eye outside of the window.
